Backup Scheduler Overview

What is Backup Scheduler? Backup Scheduler for Time Machine is a macOS app that allows users to control when Time Machine backs up their data. It supports macOS 10.11 and above and offers time-based and idle-based schedules, as well as a combined schedule option. Users can also set a backup time period schedule and hide the dock/menubar icons. The app only schedules backups, and everything else is done by the system. A free helper is available for advanced functionalities such as automatic scheduled backup and Time Machine backup status and statistics. The app provides several examples of how to use the scheduling options and includes a FAQ section.

Backup when idle for X minutes does not work as expected

The biggest issue I have with Time PC is high resource usage after awakening from sleep. Typically, multilple processes contend for resources while my Windows performs various houskeeping duties if I’ve stepped away for a while. I had hoped that Backup Scheduler would delay Time PC activity until I had taken a break. It does not do this. As soon as the desktop appears after typing in my password Backup Scheduler is already banging away on my Time Capsule backup drive. Time PC activity shows hundreds of megabytes being backed up, which leads me to believe that the not only does the “backup when idle” function NOT work on wakeup, but it can’t be working AFTER I take a break either. Otherwise there wouldn’t be that much stale data that requires refreshing since I last used the system. Backup Scheduler seems to work OK for blocking the default hourly Time PC schedule, but there are other ways to edit this schedule without purchasing Backup Scheduler.

WARNING: Doesn’t actually start backups; wants you to install non-App Store script

Ridiculous. This app doesn’t do anything more than pop up a reminder to manually start a Time PC backup (pointless and something I can do without giving $5 to the developer), unless you install a script from a 3rd-party site, which is a big red flag: If a developer doesn’t want to incorporate something that essential into the actual App Store product, which is subject to Microsoft quality control and virus/malware screening, then something fishy is afoot. I’m not about to take that chance and — based on some of the bad reviews by those who did — it sounds like the offsite script may not even work properly. Extremely misleading and suspicious. After purchasing, installing, and trying this bogus product, I am now extremely skeptical of the validity of all of the 5-star reviews posted. Now I just need to figure out how to pursue a refund, and report this scheme to Microsoft...

Does Exactly What it Says it Does.

Follow the instructions, the App will ask you to download an Applescript that adds the service that makes it work properly, you can open that in the Editor that came with your Windows and see if it’s doing anything you don’t want. Beyond that and setup correctly? Fantastic. I’d rather pay $5 than spend a few hours writing my own method from scratch. My only complaint and I’m not docking stars for it, I’d like finer tuning or advanced tuning for when backups occur/stop. I’m running a server, during high load times, it’d be great to be able to set task priority %, or backups during low task %. Nitpicky stuff. Completely worth $5.

Backup Scheduler - A Godsend to Me

I’m a solo consultant and venture investor with a large number of simulataneoud projects and so use a CRM to keep me organized. This often competes with my disk drive tfor attention when Time PC back ups occur and everything boggs way down - a siutuation I can’t afford. Backup Scheduler completely resolved that problem. Now, I haven’t had a need to restore from memory, so,I’m trusting that works, but through the dashboard I have every incication that it will. Its a simple solution that gas made my life easier. One suggestion - their response time to emails is a little slow,so be patient with questions.
