Software Reviews and Criticism

    Appauling

I own the license to this software and created docs on my pc for years. I downloaded the app to my iphone where I continued to access my files via icloud until one day, inadvertently not locking my screen, managed to delete the excel app with phone in my pocket. Once I discovered the app had been deleted, I attempted to access my files ithat were saved in the cloud... they were gone, they were ALL GONE!! Files I had created on my pc and saved in the cloud were deleted when the app on my phone was deleted. I bought the rights to use the excel program on my pc, I have the right to save files created there in the cloud. How does Microsoft have the right to delete a years worth of work simply because i deleted their crappy app?!? OUTRAGEOUS! and the tech support will do nothing but consume hours and hours of your time... USELESS!

    too many flaws

I used to run Office 2011 for Windows. It was working perfectly. Excel 365 does work generally but comes with so many flaws and reduced functionality compared to the older versions. It's incredible that I now have to pay annually for that. Often it's small things but things that made it easy to work with. Just a few examples: Sometimes the mousepointer highlights the cell above. The Quick Access Toolbar is far worse than the Windows version. Many important commands cannot be added, such as font color. It cannot be put in a different bar like in Windows. Its icons are very hard to read in the green frame bar. And there is a lot more wrong. Maybe I'll add more later.

Will change the rating if they ever fix this one problem

If you are working on files in OneDrive with auto save enabled, there is a bug in the Windows version that is extremely problematic. When you enter something into a cell and then select a different cell, there is a brief moment (maybe half a second) during which excel will ignore user input. If you are someone that types fast and are entering data into cells quickly, the first character you type into the following cell will likely be ignored. This is extremely frustrating as I have to constantly double check the data that I'm entering and making sure this issue doens't mess up my data. Been waiting weeks and still there is no fix. I was told to submit a bug report, which I did, and no one got back to and the issue is still not fixed despite multiple new updates.

    Breaking existing Excel install

If you already have Excel installed with the up-front price and then you install this then it will irrevocably delete your existing Excel. Then if you try to download from Microsoft (burried under the "Try Now" button) I get a "cookies disabled" error and cannot download it. I understand that Microsoft might prevent Microsoft from mentioning what the customer needs to do in this situation. If that is the case then Microsoft should explicitly update the app to say "Microsoft will not allow us to put the link here" to avoid a low review score.

Nice to have Xcell on my Microsoft LT - use it all the time.

However, There are a few nagging problems: 1) When copying & Pasting or moving a cell from one place to another, the border lines move with the selection. The Borders should be seperate from the formatting of the cell as well as the contents of the cell. 2) The pointer does not always change acording to the area of the cell I click on. ie, the bottom right corner should turn the pointer to a black and be able to drag or after selecting, hovering over the edge should turn the pointer into a hand, both of which are hard to get the program to do some times. I usually have to zoom in to make cell larger. 3) When working in a Book that has many sheets all with interlocking pointers to other sheets within the same book, sometimes the sheet you are on does not update the value of the cell until it is in the viewing area of the monitor and selected. This can cause problems when program refresh lags. I'm guessing refresh lag is because of the size of the workbook. Should be that whenever a change is made on a sheet, then the whole book should update and not wait till it is being displayed on the screen. Most computers, have multiple processors now days, so this should not be an issue.
