Whatʹs Great

1. But if you do have experience with programming, then you can apply those skills to create even more complex models by using loops, functions and variables to procedurally generate geometry.

2. Instead of haphazardly dragging polygons and vertices around in a GUI, ShapeScript lets you define your models precisely using code.

3. The ShapeScript app includes a parser for a simple language (also called “ShapeScript”).

4. ShapeScript (the language) is a cross between a markup language and a programming language.

5. ShapeScript is a 3D modeling program for people who don’t like 3D modeling programs.

  • What does ShapeScript do? ShapeScript is a 3D modeling program for people who don’t like 3D modeling programs. Instead of haphazardly dragging polygons and vertices around in a GUI, ShapeScript lets you define your models precisely using code. No artistic skills are required - ShapeScript does all the drawing for you. The ShapeScript app includes a parser for a simple language (also called “ShapeScript”). ShapeScript (the language) is a cross between a markup language and a programming language. You don’t need to be a programmer to use ShapeScript. If you have ever worked with any kind of structured text like JSON or HTML then it should come naturally. But if you do have experience with programming, then you can apply those skills to create even more complex models by using loops, functions and variables to procedurally generate geometry.

      Very good, easy to use

I really like this tool. It is really easy to make shapes, I got the hang of it very quickly. So cool how you can add textures!! Very good, will be using for a project soon.

      Incomplete, unclear pay wall

I was caught off gaurd by the need for an external editor. The lack of x,y,z annotations, or scale reference, or plane grit, or horizon display, ability to set a background color or image, ability to snap to an ortho, top, left, right view made me feel like I was in a college demo rather than in a full featured application. When I explored the file menu, I found the "Purchase Export Feature..." item to leave me wondering about price. ($9.99 USD) which is probably fair for the work put in, but feels high for the lack of features. Overall I decided it was not worth paying, so I can't say how well the export feature works. If the developer makes the edit experience more user friendly I would consider paying to be able to export.

      Proprietary OpenSCAD Clone

I saw a tweet mentioning this app and was excited for a better 3D design app for Windows. Sadly this isn't it. My first issue is that this app doesn't include an editor. Instead the author allow/relies on whatever editor you like. By default Xcode opened for me, odd but okay. Second, the scripting is like OpenSCAD but not. So whatever is written for this app can't really be shared with the large 3D printing community. The scripting language seemed straight forward enough, but also different enough that converting existing OpenSCAD scripts would be a pain. OpenSCAD is ugly as sin and doesn't take advantage of great Windows technolgoies like Metal, but for me ShapeScript it's currently not worth a new learning curve.

      I love ShapeScript

I've used a number of 3D modeling tools, including 123D Design, Fusion 360, SketchUp, and Blender. I'm also not by any means a professional 3D designer. I am a programmer, and ShapeScript matches my mental model for 3D design much better. The app itself has an incredibly simple UI, mostly just acting as a preview window for your model, while you actually edit the code in your text editor of choice (I use BBEdit). I use it for creating 3D models for printing, and it has worked flawlessly. The developer is also super responsive, and has implemented features I personally have requested. I love that my models are stored in plain text. I can endlessly edit them with no need to worry about messing up my undo stack and being "stuck). I can write loops to create repetitive geometry. I can super easily define parametric geometries. I can even keep my models under version control.
