  • What does Bad North do? Your home is under attack. The king is dead at the hands of Viking invaders. Hope is a distant glimmer in the fog, fading fast with every passing moment. As you rise to take your father’s place as ruler, it will fall to you to stage your defenses. But make no mistake – this is no fight for victory, but a desperate grasp for survival. Bad North is a charming but brutal real-time tactics roguelite. Defend your idyllic island kingdom against a horde of Viking invaders, as you lead the desperate exodus of your people. Command your loyal subjects to take full tactical advantage of the unique shape of each island. Everything is at stake: fail, and watch the blood of your subjects stain the ground red. It’s charmingly brutal, with beautiful procedurally-generated islands and adorable soldiers juxtaposed against the blood-stained realities of war. You control the broad strokes of the battle, giving high level commands to your soldiers who try their best to carry them out in the heat of the moment. It’s accessibly deep, with simple player inputs masking a dynamic combat simulation that make it inviting to new players while challenging veterans. Keep fighting, warriors. Not for power or riches or glory, but for hope of peace to come once again in the harsh lands of the Bad North. Key Features REAL-TIME TACTICS ROGUELITE: Position and relocate your troops to fend off the Vikings, who each have their own counters to the threats you pose. Pick your battles and plan your evacuations carefully! Lose a commander and they’re gone forever; lose everything, and it’s game over! INTELLIGENT UNIT CONTROLS: You command the broad strokes of your defenses and monitor positioning — your soldiers do the rest, navigating and engaging intuitively in response to the situation at hand. PROCEDURALLY-GENERATED ISLANDS: Each island is both stylistically charming and unique in its layout. Plan your strategies around every nook and cranny, for you only get one chance to save them from the enemy invasion. UNLOCKABLE UPGRADES: A stronger, smarter defense leads to greater rewards. Use these to develop your subjects from a ragtag militia into seasoned warriors.

      Fun, missing some depth

Overall, it's a fun game and reasonably worth the price. The UI mechanics are great. It's got that indie feel to it, which means there's no silly distracting fluff, but also means the depth and balance isn't quite there. In particular, the level of difficulty between "Normal" and "Hard" is steep - it would be great to have something in-between. Note that I've got a 2013 PC w/NVIDIA GeForce 750M, i7 w/16G. The game runs just fine for me - I've not had any crashes or stability problems. I'd highly recommend you play with a mouse.

      Simply Addicting

A real-time strategy game that has a deceptive amount of depth to it, a very simple way of playing, and an addictive gameplay style. Enemies ramp up in difficulty and require different counters from your units. Sometimes the island itself makes your defense easy, but other times it makes it really hard, and you won't know what bad guys are attacking until they show up. Even when you've worked out some winning tactics, circumstances can randomly make a fight quite a bit tougher than you'd expect. You can upgrade your troops and use special items and abilities, and figuring out how to use this stuff effectively takes a lot of skill and experimentation.

Very Resource Intensive and Crashes -- But fun!

I really enjoy playing this game on my iPad Mini 4, and so I thought I would buy it for my MBP (Early 2015). According to the entry here on the App Store, it should run. And it does... But the last time I played for just a few minutes, the CPU temp went up to 81C and the fan went wild. The game play was slow and the graphics suffered from the resource requirements. I like this game, but I probably won't be playing it on my MBP (2015). Maybe in a year or so when I get a newer laptop, I will look at it again. Oh, and for the gent who thought we should all know about how to do "left button" "right button" on a track pad, Ctrl-click will also work. Not sure why, though, on the initial run, Bad North asked for permission to intercept key strokes from other applications. Bottomline: If you have older hardware, even if the App Store says it will run on your equipment, save the money you'd spend on this game towards a new laptop/computer. In the long run, it's overall the better decision.

      Love The Game, but BUGGY!!!

I love the game itself, it is a fun, whimesial and challanging game that involves combat but is aimed more at your ability to plan both strategically and tactically. BUT. Every stinking time you move to a new isalnd in the game it induced a bug that caused seizure inducing level flickering that would not stop until you quit the game entirely and restrated. Playing on a year old Windows which is beyond the specs required for the game. C'mon you guys it can't be that hard to test for robustness. That seems like a minimal task before launch. If they fix the bugs I'd be five stars for this game.
