Monal Overview

What is Monal? Monal is an open-source chat app that allows users to connect to their chat server without giving a third party access to their password or messages. The app has a strong focus on privacy, with no ads or user behavior tracking. All messages are exchanged directly with the XMPP chat server, and the app implements certain extensions to improve performance. Notable features include reply from OS notification bubbles, support for corporate XMPP servers that require VPN, MUC multi-user chat, OMEMO encrypted chat, and the ability to download chat history. Monal has been heavily tested with Google Talk, Openfire, Prosody, and eJabberd servers. Additionally, the app supports XEP-0280 (Message Carbons), XEP-0198 (Stream Management), XEP-0199 (XMPP Ping), XEP-0313 (Message Archive Management), XEP-0352 (Client State Indication), and XEP-0363 (HTTP File Upload).

Software Reviews and Criticism

Previous versions worked well... won't stay connected now.

Same as a previous reviewer posted. The recent version of the app won't stay connected well to my eJabberd server, but previous versions (before 2.2) worked rather well. Unfortunately, I can't go back to the older version via the Windows App Store now. I belive the developer is working to fix this, but until then my app is broken. :( Hopefully a fix will be coming soon.

Does Not Stay Connnected - Bummer

Disconnects every few seconds, which makes using it impossible. Looks like there is potential for this much needed product on the Windows OS. I would gladly pay for a good jabber client.

Nice to have an app, some features I miss from Adium

So far it works for Gtalk. I wish I could sort by active inactive, make groups and such. also menu item notifications would be nice=)

    privacy and security!

I love the fact that it’s open source, and thus open to review for security and privacy concerns.
