DuckDuckGo Privacy Overview

What is DuckDuckGo Privacy? DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials is a browser extension that provides best-in-class privacy essentials to prevent online tracking. It blocks tracking cookies and hidden tracking scripts on websites, and automatically expires first-party cookies after 7 days. The extension can be enabled with Tracker Blocking and the Privacy Dashboard within Safari, and DuckDuckGo Private Search is built into Safari as a default search option. The extension aims to block as many hidden trackers as possible, but cannot block them all due to new trackers emerging and potential functionality issues. DuckDuckGo is committed to privacy and offers additional resources such as a Privacy Newsletter, Privacy Policy, and Open Source Code.

DuckDuckGo Privacy for Safari Features and Description

Key Features:

- Block tracking cookies: Prevent most cross-site (aka 3rd party) cookies from tracking you as you browse from site to site. The app also helps prevent websites from tracking you with their own cookies by automatically expiring those first-party cookies after 7 days.

- Escape online tracking: Block most hidden tracking scripts lurking on the websites you visit (e.g., when you click on search results). Stop companies behind those trackers before they use sneaky tactics to try to collect and sell your data.

- Enable Tracker Blocking and the Privacy Dashboard within Safari: After installing the extension, users will be asked to enable Tracker Blocking and the Privacy Dashboard within Safari. Enabling all three gives seamless privacy protection.

- DuckDuckGo Private Search: Although the extension doesn't include DuckDuckGo Private Search, it is built into Safari as a default search option.

- Privacy, simplified: The app provides best-in-class privacy essentials and makes browsing Safari even faster.

- Note about tracker blocking for 3rd-party sites: DuckDuckGo never tracks users. When users leave the search engine to use other sites, the app aims to block as many hidden trackers as possible, but it can't block them all for a few reasons. New trackers emerge all the time, so first, the app needs to find them. Then, blocking these trackers can sometimes break functionality, so the app needs to develop new approaches without hurting usability. Additionally, in the extension, the app offers a specific type of protection that stops scripts from even loading on 3rd-party sites, which isn’t offered on most popular browsers by default. Currently, this one loading protection doesn't apply to Microsoft scripts on 3rd-party sites due to contractual restrictions. However, the app's other tracker blocking methods are unrestricted.

Software Reviews and Criticism

    Won't update

Won't update to 1.0.1. Available in App store. Tries to download but then says "update" after downloading. Update: yes, the problem was that Safari was open. I was able to get it to update once I closed it. Seems the App Store should have indicated that I needed to quit the app to update.

    Won't update here either

Same as rlc3. Update process completes then still shows update needed.

    Just like the rest...

These extensions just block everything on a site and ruins the experience.

Helpful sidekick to Safari's existing UI (Multi-Device)

I've strictly used duckduckgo for browsing comfortably on iOS and desktop for years. Heres my two cents on what the folks at DuckDuckGo are doing: WHAT OTHERS CAN'T! At a currently rare price of $0.00, you receive an even rarer, comfortable interface on mobile. That alone shows how these devs don't cut corners and use their resources in a expertly manner. In PC, it is much the same. It works within the Safari browser, as an extension, where it becomes a second line of defense for tracker-blocking throughout the internet. Above all, their services prompted me to write a thourough, positive review. Thank you DuckDuckGo!

Sometimes, you just want to have fun ...

... and not have the world watching. Like others, I'm a big fan of the iOS version. In this case, I was a bit confused at first because it's not a separate browser. This is good and bad - good because you don't have to transfer all your bookmarks & preferences to a new app. The bad is minor. Because it's the same browser if you need to open recently updated files and don't want to clear cache, good luck on sites that are slow to update -or that just might be my site, in which case, no bad at all.
