SnipTag Overview

What is SnipTag? SnipTag is a photo tool app that offers two powerful features to help users organize their photos. The first feature, SNIP, allows users to batch-crop dozens of scanned photos with one click, making it a blessing for those scanning hundreds or thousands of printed photos. The second feature, TAG, enables users to add captions and metadata to their digital photos, making them easier to find and search. SnipTag's powerful metadata editor supports more than 25 IPTC and EXIF metadata tags, and its Photo Finder can quickly retrieve the photos users need. The app offers a free version with limited exports, flexible subscriptions, and a one-time purchase option to unlock all features permanently. SnipTag assures users of complete privacy as all processing is done locally on their Mac, and nothing is ever uploaded to any server.

Great utility to auto crop multiple photos and edit metadata

It crops multiple photos in image files and straightens them, quite well! For the “Snip" feature to work, you do need about 1 cm or so separation between the photos (found that in the User Guide). It does not auto-rotate the photos, but you can multi-select and rotate them with one click. The “Tag” feature allows you to edit metadata (aka EXIF) for individual photos or in bulk - a huge time saver. Planning to scan old photos, 2 or 4 pics at a time on my flatbed scanner, and use this tool to reduce the drudgery of manual editing.

    Fabulous for metadata

It works great. I have tried some other similar apps, but always found them to be lacking in one way or another. This one is a winner. I have over 20K photos, and the batch-editing and dictation functions in this app have been quite helpful in my initial testing. Navigation could be improved in some places, but overall it’s intuitive enough to use. The included user guide is a good place to begin. Automatic cropping of scans looks useful but I haven’t given it a try so far.

Just in time — and amazed!

This app couldn't have come at a better time. I have been struggling with managing my collection of over 17,000 photographs spanning 25 years. SnipTag is functional and (mostly) easy to use. I had no idea that much detail got captured in photos (though the fields can be a little confusing. Hover tips, please!) Other wish-list items — — Handles while cropping. — Auto-save would be nice. SnipTag is in its early days. I expect great improvements in ease of use and features as comments and reviews come in.

    Excellent for beginners!

This app gives you everything you need to put in the essentials of metadata into your photos, and it couldn't be easier for beginners. Highly recommend!

When it worked, it was decent enough! But now it crashes

I tried this on a subsample of my images. Maybe a dozen. And it worked. Not perfectly, it couldn't nail the cropping dead on. But it was close enough that clean up work would be tolerable for the few hundred images I had to parse now (and possibly a lot more later). I paid for the full version, I like to support developers creating unique niche apps. Plus the cost is neglible considering how long it will take me to do this manually! But like magic, it almost quit working then. I need to run any Canon RAW images through a converter to make them TIF first. But they are larger files. And the app hangs before it even gets to 20. So I tried the Jpeg verision, and it still crashes. I am very disappointed. If you are looking at this app it is close to what you need. But I can't say for sure it will deliver.
