Software Reviews and Criticism

Ok, bare bones - spell dialogue correctly

You can tell the creators don’t really know what they are making when they spell dialogue, dialog, the computer term not the spoken word and screenplay spelling, dialogue. Are you making a computer program or a screenwriting software. This app doesn’t seem completely finished. So many blatant bugs. The format always puts 1 space after periods or shifts paragraphs over and looks weird. Not intuitive switching with TAB to the next format. The three most used should be character, dialogue and action. On iphone and ipad I can switch scenes around by dragging, but on Windows version you can’t. Always opens at 100% which is tiny, doesn’t remember 150% is what I last used. Keeps the icloud open screen open even after I open a script. the login button keeps saying loging and doesn’t switch to logged in or say my user name. They shouldn’t charge this much for this app and then have it be crappy.

    some bugs

This is the only screenplay formatting software I’ve used, so even if I think it does a good job, perhaps other software is better? CeltX has crashed several times without warning but also without losing any of my work. On several other occasions, I’ve had to save locally rather than to the cloud and then I’ve had some trouble moving the local version to the cloud. It seemed that I wasn’t logged in for some reason. Also, I’ve found that the Microsoft keychain doesn’t work so well on the login screen, making it impossible to log in since I can’t recall a password created by keychain. So, it’s buggy but better than formatting a word program. Just save your work regularly.

    As Advertised

I see a lot of reviewers base their experience on ultimately not understanding the purpose behind this app, which are unwarranted. You get what you pay for, and for the price, with it’s essential features, it's a godsend compared to other screenwriting apps. However, the functionality is plagued with a bug other reviewers are commenting about with respect to app crashes. About an hour after purchasing, the app crashed and upon reopening, I couldn’t even delete a single letter without the app crashing again. A note to Celtx, Inc: please fix this. The updated design, essential screenwriting functions, and price are perfect, but this bug is quickly making me reconsider the purchase. If a fix can’t come soon enough, I recommend their cloud/online platform. Otherwise, hold tight until an update is released. December 2017 UPDATE: Celtx Support has been outstanding in their response time - special shoutout to Marcel for being helpful with quick, temporary fixes for the app crashes while waiting for a full app update. As for the update, no reoccuring issues yet. ALL apps are susceptible to bugs from time-to-time, but so far this latest update has been fantastic. Thanks Celtx!

    It’s pretty OK.

Celtx does what is advertised. Screen writing tool. Reading the remarks, I think it would be great to bring in the features of the original open source product. That would be great. But for now, please do something about the crashes. I can’t always use the online site so I must use the offline app to work. I would estimate it crashes on me once every hour at a minimum. Sometimes I get crash after crash and I need to get up and take a long walk. Please fix the crashes.

waste of $20 and my soul is crying

I cannot write an important story because this app keeps crashing every time I type a single letter. After crashing and reopening, the project saves the script in a William S. Burroughs "cut-up" method, and phrases missing all together. I don't have a lot of money as it is (my life choice of wanting to be a screenwriter), and so my heart and soul aches so much knowing I can't properly compose my work. I had to update to the Big Sur OS and my old illegally downloaded Celtx from 2010 became obsolete, hence making the leap into this super expenisve crummy software. How does one even justify spending that much money on something that doesn't actually exist. Well, I suppose because the older version has treated me so kindly over the years and I'm naive enough to think people (and the people behind art tools such as Celtx) create to help and support others, just as I strive for with my own work. I guess I'll be bad and wander the cyber streets to find an old celtx again that is compatibe with this newer OS? Yes perhaps I'll catch the clap, but that burn will be worth it for the passion of writing.
