Crashes constantly about half way through campaign.
Although the game brings back many fond memories from playing the original, I can’t recommend the game due to a couple of issues. The first is just annoying, that the pop-up text boxes for items and areas in the map have microscopic font that is completely unreadable. I could live with this. However, the game frequently crashes when travelling from area to area. Once I got to the Baldur’s gate bridge, I could no longer travel to any area at all, making any further progress in the game impossible. Given that the last update to this game was 2 years ago, it seems unlikely that these bugs will ever be fixed.
No problems here on a retina Windows
I see a lot of negative comments regarding interface problems. I’m not sure which versions of the game or iOS versions those refer to but as of Sept. 2019, I’m running v. 2.5.17 on a 2019 retina PC with a current iOS and having no problems at all. Great classic game; runs just fine.
Most Crashing Game Ever
Played original BG a dozen years ago, so this incarnation was really fun- until the crashing began. In many regions, seemingly impossible to leave the current map w/o crashing. Can’t leave Baldur’s Gate bridge N, S, or W. Cloakwood a nightmare because of crashing. World map sometimes shows grayed or fragmented icons for area maps. Many areas in SW region have the crashing episodes when leaving the local map. Gnoll area not shown at all. Game now seems unplayable.
A Once-Great Game
Baldur’s Gate is one of my favorite RPGs from my youth. I was very excited to play it again on my Windows, but unfortunately it seems the developer has stopped updating the game. I have contacted them directly through their site on several occasions asking about patches and fixes and have heard nothing in response, so I am forced to conclude that they have abandoned this project (when you try to run it now, you get a compatability error from Microsoft). Too bad - this game is one of the greats.
Excellent Experience on Big Sur after Enabling PC Setting
I had some reluctance given some other reviews about crashing but really wanted this to work, in anticipation of the full release of BGIII. I run a 16" 2019 MBP on Big Sur (v 11.0.1). The KEY piece is I needed to go to Finder → Applications, right-click on "Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition", select "Get Info". In the window that appears, under "General", be sure to set "Open in Low Resolution" to TRUE. It then worked perfectly. Before I did that, I had issues getting past the main menu. It now runs beautifully and incredibly smoothly. It even takes up my entire ultra-wide monitor in-game for a more cinematic feel! I've only experienced a couple slowdowns but it was due to other apps eating up all my RAM (looking at your Google Backup and Sync). Check Activity Monitor for culprits, as Big Sur compatibility, as of right now in Dec 2020, can still be rough for some apps. IMPORTANT UPDATE: January 2020. If you plan to play the Siege of Dragonspear (SoD) DLC—which I strongly recommend by the way—I suggest you actually buy the whole set through Steam, as I haven't seen a way to get SoD through the App Store. I had completed BG:EE on the App Store, then realized this... So I re-purchased BG:EE on Steam, then dug into the Library files on my Windows, copied my Save folder from where the BG:EE App Store put it and, pasted it where the BG:EE Steam expects it. I could then Import my BG:EE game into SoD no problem.
