Display Maid Overview
What is Display Maid? Display Maid is an app that allows users to save and restore window positions based on their display configuration or user-created profiles. It is useful for those who use laptops with external displays and need to rearrange their windows every time they connect/disconnect their display. Users can save the positions of their windows, restore the last saved set of window positions with a single click or keyboard shortcut, and save multiple window position sets with profiles. Display Maid can also automatically restore window positions when a display is connected/disconnected or when an app is launched. However, it does not support full-screen or tiled apps, and it cannot save or restore positions for windows that are not in the currently active space.
1. Q: I told Display Maid to restore all window positions but it didn't launch all my apps.
2. Display Maid allows you to save and restore window locations based on your display configuration or user created profiles.
3. If you find yourself constantly rearranging your window positions for different tasks (Work vs Presentations), then Display Maid can help.
4. Display Maid can’t save or restore positions for windows that are not in the currently active space.
5. If you are using the same app in multiple spaces, you’ll find that saving window positions for that app in one space will overwrite the save state for the previous space.
6. • Automatically restore window positions when a display is connected/disconnected.
7. You can save/restore window positions across multiple spaces, but you’ll have to move to the spaces one by one and perform the save/restore action.
8. If you have a laptop that you use with one or more external displays, and you're tired of having to rearrange your windows every time you connect/disconnect your display, then Display Maid is for you.
9. Save one set with a single display, save another with multiple, those layouts will only restore with the appropriate display configuration.
10. • Restore the last saved set of window positions with a single click, or keyboard shortcut.
11. • Window layouts are owned by a specific display configuration.

No Spaces support?
I downloaded this to try it out. I was hoping for something that would let me arrange my windows one way when I’m plugged in to my two external monitors, and a completely different way when running on just the laptop screen. I’m set up with separate Spaces on each display, and I tested by unplugging my external monitors, moving the windows where I wanted them on my laptop-only setup, and then plugging my monitors back in. As best I can tell the “Auto Restore” setting doesn’t do anything if you move any of your windows between unplugging your monitors and plugging them back in. If you explicitly save and restore window positions, it seems to move them around on the (x,y) coordinate space, but it *doesn’t* put move them onto a different Space if they’re in the wrong one. So, not helpful in my case. I guess I’m going to the trouble of learning how to configure Slate instead.
Perfect App, Great Support!
If you regularly plug into an external monitor, particularly with a laptop, Display Maid eliminates the chore of resizing and repositioning your windows - exactly as advertised. I know it seems silly, but this saves probaly 20 minutes a day for me. While Display Maid 1.X was great, the FREE update to 2.0 has been a fantastic update. The program is much more responsive and fluid (not that it wasn’t plenty responsive before). Lastly, I had a small edge case problem during the upgrade. I emailed support and got feedback extremely quickly, solving my problem. This is a developer that cares about its product. I THOROUGHLY endorse Display Maid and Funk-iSoft (the developer).
Works great for me!
I have my Windows and two side monitors for real estate and frequently have a lot of windows open. Typically running slack, iterm (tmuxed for 4 - 6 tiles), a project or two in atom, postman, mail, pandora in its own chrome window, then another chrome window (with multiple tabs) open for news and the applications I am working on. I can now spread them all out, get them where I like them and save the configuration so when I start up next time,I can quickly get each application/window running in its proper location.
Best I've found so far
There is some definite room for improvement, but even so, this has been the best tool for organizing my windows across multiple displays. I work at my desk in a two monitor environment, but often detach my laptop to go to meetings. I also work with two monitors at home. It is very frustrating to re-arrange my windows after unplugging from a monitor and then returning. This is definitely an improvement. Some things I would like to see improved: * More intuitive UI. It took both my co-worker and myself several days to start to understand the various settings. The use of the terms Space and Workspace were especially confusing, as they appear to represent the same thing. As a result, I kept resaving my spaces and overriding what I intended it to do. * Similarly, I had to hit enter key in the name field of a workplace setting for it to be saved. This is counter-intuitive to most preference setting pages. * I'm still not exactly sure how the preference settings for AutoSave and AutoRestore interact with multiple workspaces. To get consistent results, I finally just turned them both off. Bottom line: I'm still happy with my purchase, but I hope they can clean things up in a subsequent release so that I can take better advantage of what they seem to promise.
No Space Support
This app is a must have if you spend your day connecting and detacking from an extternal monior, however it doesn't suppoirt space so while it doesn't remember what space an app opens in, you can still use Spaces to force an app to open on a specific Desktop. Desktops do get preserved in when disconnecting and reconnecting montitor (as long as "Automatically Rearrange Spaces" is turned off, so you can use Display Made profiles to restore window location and size between modes. Profiles do NOT change automatically so you should have one for each of your hardware configs (laptop only. monitor only, laoptop and monitor, etc...) It's a bit clunky but it does preserve your workspace well enough so you don't have windows thrown to the botton of the screen where you have only one pixel to grab!
