BreakTime Overview
What is BreakTime? BreakTime is a Mac utility designed to help users remember to take breaks away from their computer. It runs in the dock and/or menu bar and uses Magic Rescheduling™ technology to actively monitor keyboard and mouse usage and intelligently reschedule breaks. The app has a clean, simple, and attractive interface and allows users to set the length and time between breaks. It also offers the option to enforce breaks by disabling access to other programs. BreakTime is designed to reduce the continuous time spent sitting in front of a computer, which has been linked to an increased risk of death by the American Cancer Society. Essential app for chair workers
It’s been proven that even if one regularly works out at a gym, spending the rest of the day in a sedentary position can undo all the good, and contribute to declining health. Breaktime has proved to be an excellent ‘trainer’ during my marathons glued to my chair in front of the computer. Variable interval between breaks and variable, user-determined length of the break. Hours can pass unnoticed when we’re working or deeply involved with other computer actives and Breaktime provides the opportunity to do ourselves good. The timer can be overridden or delayed if necessary (like when an Art Director is metaphorically or actually breathing over your shoulder). It offers sufficient flexibility and simplicity to be a standard tool that I depend on.
Almost perfect, but...
The app is simple and does what is suppose to do, the only problem I have with it, is this: a few seconds before the break there is a pop up countdown window to let you know that the break will start soon, which is good thing but the problem is that if you working at this time (which you probably does) and press on the space bar, it disable the app altogether. It turn the app OFF and if you didn't noticed it (as usualy happened) you might notice that you had no breaks, only after a few hours. I hope they will fix it in a way that you have to turn the app off only by clicking on the On/Off button intentionally. Apart of this one, it's really great little app.
Pretty good, but does not play well with full screen/multiple monitors
I love the general functionality, but it does not quite cooperate with multiple monitors and/or full screen apps. The app tries to give you a few seconds of warning before seizing your screen with the break notification, but the warning dialog never displays for me on my second monitor in full screen. It gets very frustrating having your input stolen without warning several times a day. I wish the warning would display on all screens or at least an option existed to play a soft audio cue a few moments before the break.
Great App - does what it says
There are a number of Apps like this out there. The others all seem to be a little querky in their own way and work to a lesser extent. BreakTime is simple, stylish and does what it is supposed to. Don’t waste your time looking any further.
