HACK Overview

What is HACK? HACK for YC's Hacker News is a free, ad-free, and subscription-free app that allows users to read the latest tech, startup, and STEM news. Users can log in or register their Hacker News account, receive push notifications for replies to comments or posts, and browse all known Hacker News endpoints. The app supports split view on iPads, 3D touch for peek and pop, and home screen 3D touch shortcuts. Users can also customize the app's color scheme, font, and layout. The app is powered by Algolia API and Hacker News API, and all stories and comments are presented in nested threads. The app is available on MacOS and can be used to submit new posts, reply, comment, and browse top 100 leader accounts.

1. - Powerful search (powered by Algolia API) - use @date to sort by date, #story to filter for stories, #comments to filter for comments, #author_username to filter by user etc.

2. This is useful for when you are viewing the app in split view / multitasking and like opening the link / story / comment in a browser side by side.

3. - On iPads, you can drag a story / comment / story's image (link) to open it in safari in split view.

4. Supports Brave, Firefox, Firefox Focus, Orion, Opera Touch, Dolphin, DuckDuckGo, iCab Mobile, Microsoft Edge and Chrome.

9. - I run my own server for caching high quality favicons shown in the app plus for push notifications for replies.

The best HN reader for iOS

Hack is a featureful, intuitive, and fast HN reader that does everything I need and more. The developer is super responsive to feedback and actually implemented a feature I requested (ability to change the default web browser) within a day or two. Amazing! Highly recommended app, I suggest if you enjoy it to purchase the $4.99 in-app purchase to support further development. The app’s value far exceeds this cost.

Best so far

No purchase needed, no ads. Probably will pay the $5 to support the dev, though, because this kind of functionality is rare for ios apps without either ads or in-app purchases. Quite the hidden gem. Lots of settings to choose from. I especially like being able to select the text of a comment to copy by long-pressing on a comment, and from there, there are a lot of options, including copying the text as a whole, or selecting a certain part of the text as it pops up with the options. Now will look for other apps made by this dev! Edit: decided to purchase, it’s worth it

Very nice reader!

It has all of the functionality I want (including customization options, like disabling favicons, which I find distacting). I'm very happy with this reader. The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is that the apps performance (scrolling, navigation) suffers greatly when the app is in PC full screen mode. Hopefully this is something the developer will look into for a future update! Thanks again!

Fantastic, fast, friendly!

The HN website is easy enough to use on mobile, but Hack honestly makes it so much more enjoyable. The customization is insane and fits my love of having a bespoke experience. Developer is active and exceptionally fast to respond. If you use HN and like checking it out in your phone you’re doing a disservice not browsing it via Hack.

The most advanced app I’ve seen with great support

After checking out more then 5 different apps HACK ended up being the winner. BONUS - I stumbled on a bug where “procrastination feature” would result in blank pages, developer was very responsive and added feature to roadmap.
