News Explorer Overview
What is News Explorer? News Explorer is a newsreader app that allows users to sync their RSS, JSON, Atom, Reddit, and Twitter subscriptions, folder setup, news items, read statuses, and favorites across all their Apple devices through iCloud. Absolutely the best
Combines a superb reading experience—on par with Reeder, NetNewsWire, and other better-known readers—with iCloud sync! iCloud sync means that you don’t need an expensive subscription to a 3rd-party service in order to keep your iPhone, iPad and Windows in sync. The combined cost of this app for all of those devices is less than I was paying for 1 year of service to a 3rd-party RSS service. The reading experience is attractive and thoughtfully designed. There are good keyboard shortcuts. It looks pretty, and there are several customization options, all of which seem to look great. Compare with similar apps where the presentation is ugly and I struggle to find *any* combination of options that is attractive and comfortable to read. Very happy with this app.
Feedback
This is a great app to have. I can only suggest developer to improve few things: FOLDERS You can create folder by going to MENU File > New Folder or Pressing at the lower left. Both ways folder will be created but it will not be visible in the side bar list until you add a feed to this folder. At first I thought this is a bug and created multiple same folders which I could not see. Then when I tried using Folder manager I found my folder in the list. There is no option to rename the folders and not even an option to create folders. Very confusing. It would be much simpler if you could see empty folders just like in most Microsoft apps. TOOLBAR By default toolbar buttons don’t have text and there is no option to make the text visible. It would be much simpler to learn the app if by default button text were visible and provide an option to disable text. PLUS and Refresh It would be probably easier if these two buttons were part of the toolbar. Sorting sidebar folders Well it's not working (a bug) you have to kill the app to refresh. Thanks
Best RSS reader available...
VERY GOOD. :) The app has a high quality and intuitive interface and iCloud syncing and works perfectly with the iOS app. It does take a little review by the user to understand some of the options and the behavior of the iCloud sync. I’ve tried several RSS apps and this is by far the best I’ve seen so far. I’ve had one freeze that required a force quit to kill the spinny beachball of death. The app forgot some marked favorites and the dark theme setting. I am assuming the favorites issue was due to the timing of an iCloud sync trigger. I’m not sure why it forgot the dark theme setting. I would like a bit more, though, like: -an option to set the default launch view to unread instead of all items -an option to vary the settings for folders or feeds instead of all settings globally (e.g. notifications, refresh periods, link behavior, etc.) -an option to play embedded videos in line in the article viewer without expanding to the full app window -the same control over the text size for the sidebar and article list that is available for the article view -the ability to add custom smart filters and alerts -more frequent updates
Bad experience
Ever since updating to the latest Microsoft OS on my computer the other day, this app is no longer loading the text of articles - it just shows a blank screen. Also, as I previously wrote in an email to the developers (receiving no response), I intentionally bought this app from my computer (via App Store) in order to get news syncing across all my devices, but when I went to download it on my phone, it's saying I have to pay again to download it. This should not be the case since I already paid! I would appreciate an update to the app to fix the new issues and resolution of my other issue ASAP. If these problems are addressed, I'll be happy to adjust my rating, but for now - one star.
Hands Down, the BEST RSS READER!
I've tried every RSS reader on the face of the earth and, in the end, I was always disappointed with something. Then, I discovered News Explorer and it is, by far, the best. Among other things, I was looking for an app that would (1) automatically download the full article images, (2) provide an incredibly beautiful user interface (fonts, spacing, margins, images, etc.) and (3) sync with ICloud. News Explorer does all of that... and much more. Do yourself a favor and get this app. News Explorer should be the number one RSS reader in the app store!
