Speechify Overview

What is Speechify? Speechify is an app that uses Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning to synthesize high-quality and natural-sounding voices. It is designed to help people with Dyslexia, ADD, Concussions, Second Language Learners, Auditory Learners, Super Learners, and Productivity Fanatics. The app allows users to upload a PDF, import a website link, copy text into the app, share from Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud, and Speechify will speak the document to them. It also has OCR and Text To Speech features that allow users to take a picture of any physical text or book and have it read like an audiobook. The app can translate text into any of 50+ languages with 98% accuracy and have it spoken in the user's native language. Users can listen at up to 900 words per minute and sync books across their iPhone, Mac, and iPad. The app is the brainchild of Cliff Weitzman, who is dyslexic and hacked an old text to speech computer system to read his summer reading book. The app has received positive reviews from users and is available for free.

Speechify - Text to Speech OCR Features and Description

1. I had no other choice, I hacked an old text to speech computer system to read the remaining portion of the book over night into my iPhone and then listen to it on the plane.

2. Upload a PDF, import a website link, copy text into the app, share from Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud, and Speechify will speak the document to you - turn your work/homework into a podcast.

3. Take a picture of any physical text or book and Speechify will read it to you like an audiobook using OCR and Text To Speech.

4. Reading that sentence takes me the same amount of time and brain energy as most people take when solving a 4 digit long division math equation in their head.

5. Designed to help people with Dyslexia, ADD, Concussions, Second Language Learners, Auditory Learners, Super Learners and Productivity Fanatics.

6. RETAIN MORE: Academic research shows that listening and reading at the same time results in significantly higher levels of comprehension AND an improvement in the listener’s reading speed even when not listening.

7. One problem....I couldn’t read my summer reading book - there was no audiobook for this book.

8. Speechify uses cutting edge Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning to synthesize the highest quality and most natural sounding voices in history.

9. Today, hundreds of thousands of people have been able to function in school and society because of Speechify.

10. "Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! My 8 year old is in the process of being officially diagnosed with dyslexia.

11. My nine year old daughter has Dyslexia and it has been very frustrating to find things that will help her.

Software Reviews and Criticism

    Handy Took, Though Extremely Llimited

This tool, while handy, is terrible for editing, an aspect many authors would readily use such a tool for. For example, despite reading dialogue in fiction, it won't speak ANY of the punctuation, so there's no way to distinguish the start or end of dialogue from the narrative, and its worthless when you have the typical dropped-ending quotes. Thus, aside from getting a 'feel' for the language flow, you can't identify when anyone starts or stops speaking. As a work around, I create an extensive library of punctuation marks, where it converts each opening smart quote mark into the text "(Opening double quote)" and each em-dash as "(em-dash)", which makes an absolute mess of the text. Adding verbal punctuation as a user-selectable option would easily earn you an extra two stars.

    When it works...

I just installed Speechify. When I want to change the title from New Document to a proper title it glitches and then I have to shut it down and start it back up. It will also read for a bit and then glitch or studder the same word over and over. I only have to click on it and it will start working again, but it is a defect. The whole trying to title a new document has be baffled.

    Awesome Tool, Unexpectedly Quits Often

I am loving the usefulness of this app. It helps in keeping me focused on readings. Although, I am finding that when I create a new file, and I begin to input text into the new file, the app unexpectedly quits. It doesn't happen every time, but has happened three times in the last day since I bought it. I love the app though, and am looking forward to when this issue can be resolved!
