Good Set & Forget Ad Blocker
Clean, simple, and easy to understand. I use on my Windows as well as my iOS devices. Great Microsoft citizen. Recent updates have made this much easier to use via the built in system controls. Also a big handy feature for me is the ability to quickly, permanently block elements on a webpage just by selecting them, great for navigating poorly designed websites with elements that cover others especially on mobile. However 4 out of 5 times when a website won't work or load it's because this is blocking some linked script or tracking redirect, which is sometimes annoying, especially when you have to do it several times every time such a link is clicked, but the app is just doing its job of blocking sketchy connections that I don't want and that's more a fault of the web at large.
Confusing, bloated
AdGuard's configuration is rather confusing. If you're used to older-style ad blockers that put a button in the toolbar with status and settings, it's going to take some effort to figure this one out. It's not like that. You don't get any sort of direct feedback for your changes. And in case you're wondering: yes, it's an "Electron" app, and yes, it comes with everything you hate about that. It doesn't look or act like a normal Windows app. None of the usual keyboard shortcuts work. None of the controls look like normal controls. There's no search, or help. The menubar is empty, and there's no context menus. Scrolling doesn't work right. It doesn't even adjust the contents of the window when you resize it (and thus, no point in doing that). If you've used any Macintosh applications in the past 20 years, this app will probably drive you crazy. It's also huge, for what it does. On disk, it's bigger than some web browsers! When running, it's only the second app on my system (after Safari, with lots of windows and videos open) which I've seen PC report "is using significant energy". What on earth is it doing? In 2020, sadly, if you visit a lot of webpages, you probably need something like this. Running AdGuard is better than looking at ads, but that's a low bar.
An Absolute Need
I purchased AdGuard for my phone and Pc/Windows initially because I was having to use websites for notes on british literature. Those sites were so riddled with ads, I couldn't even print a poem properly. AdGuard not only solved my issues while finishing college, but the simplest task of looking up a recipe or reading an article suddenly became what it should have always been - easy and stress-free. I don't have to worry about sudden popups (that show up even when your browser settings "block" popups) or a SINGLE ad. I have recommended this app to so many people (especially students), but really everyone needs an ad blocker that actually works as intended.
UPDATED: Constant update requests every time I open my computer.
UPDATE: Developer responded quickly that the issue has been fixed in the newest version. The extension doesn't seem to be asking for updates all the time anymore. With this fixed I consider this the best ad blocker you can have for Safari - it does exactly what it says it's going to do. ORIGINAL: It's great for getting rid of those pesky ads, but it's a bit ironic when an app that's supposed to remove annoying popups/ads does just that every time I open my computer. It asks you to restart safari to update, but even post-restart the message keeps popping up.
Extremely well-done. Zero lag.
After using this briefly, I have experienced no added delay to loading web pages on Safari. In addition, I have noticed that it blocks all ads correctly and has many free options that are "Premium" in other Ad Blocking applications. I also have not experienced the "Ad Blocker Detected" notifications on some websites. I am not sure if this is something that AdGuard is blocking somehow or not. If this is the case, this is another added benefit I haven't seen from other Ad Blocking applications. Overall, I am very satisfied with this application and I highly reccomend it.
