AlphaMail Overview

What is AlphaMail? AlphaMail is a lightweight email client that runs in the background and continuously checks your inbox, presenting your emails in a popover from the menu bar. It allows you to view, mark as read/unread, forward/reply, zoom in/out, and delete messages. You can also easily compose a new email with attachments and Cc/Bcc fields supported. The app supports multiple accounts and all email accounts that use IMAP and SMTP. It stores passwords in the Apple Keychain for maximum security and displays the number of unread emails in the menu bar. AlphaMail is ideal for anyone who wants to stay on top of their emails or sends a lot of emails and doesn't want the interruption of using a bloated website or client.

Software Reviews and Criticism

    Functional but barebones

The app works. Adding my Fastmail account was quick and painless. It really needs a design overhaul, though. Some things that would make it better (in priority order) The menubar icon is huge and ungainly. It could behalf the size and also incorporate the number of unread messages so the app does not need to take up 2 places on the menubar. The menubar icon does not respect alpha dimming in el cap. The font of choice is a difficult to read serif font. A switch to a native San Francisco would do wonders. It does not integrate with Address Book. If you don’t know the email address you want to compose to you’re out of luck. The hotkeys to reply/forward do not work. Downloading attachments requires too many clicks. It’s got good potential, though. Keep at it!

Good Idea — Needs Work to be Competitive

Aesthetics do matter rather puritanical in appearance but most importantly inconsistent performance rejected my “me” account [iCloud] and rejected my gmail accounts, but then those accounts appeared later. It needs more work.
