What is DaVinci Resolve Studio? DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 is a professional editing, color correction, audio post, and visual effects software tool used in high-end post-production and finishing for Hollywood feature films, television shows, and commercials. It combines 8K editing, color correction, visual effects, and audio post-production in one software tool. The software features Blackmagic Cloud for remote collaboration, Cut Page Editing for quick turnaround projects, professional editing tools, advanced color correction tools, Fusion Visual Effects for creating feature film quality visual effects, and Fairlight Audio Post for high-performance multi-track sample level editing and mixing. The paid version includes additional features such as automatic facial recognition, noise reduction, motion effects, lens flare, lens blur, and more. The Mac App store version has limitations and may not support some external control panels or 3rd party plugins. The system requirements include a current model Mac with Apple silicon or a discrete GPU, fast SSD or hard disk for video, 8GB of system memory, and at least a 1440 x 900 resolution display.

    Amazing, but

There's a reason why Davinci Resolve is so widely used for color grading in the film and video world. But two words of caution: As your color grading and noise reduction gets to be more complex, the program will tax most Microsoft laptops. Not for lack of computational horsepower, but because DR relies on your GPU, and most mainstream machines don't have high powered GPU's. Here's where it really hit home for me. I wanted to try Resolve on my Windows PC. It has an OK GPU, or I can cost effectively swap graphics cards. The real problem is that the license via the Microsoft Store can't be transferred to my Windows PC, but purchased from other sources, I could. So if you ever intend to switch between Windows and Windows, purchase Resolve elsewhere. One side note: More current machines, with Thunderbolt 3 ports, can employ external GPU's. None of my machines have TB3, though I'll likely get a Windows Mini soon, which should be a good solution for both my video and Pro Tools work. One other note- Final Cut Pro works so smoothly on even modest Macs. But you don't get all the advanced color grading features of Davinci. Bottom line- don't buy Davinci here, if you also have Windows machines in your studio.

BUYER BEWARE! DON'T BUY IT FROM Microsoft STORE!

As you have read from all of the reviews. Its true. I was dumb enough to buy it from the Microsoft store and received no activiation key. Instead I learned that Microsoft controls all the keys and app updates so essentially if there is a new release or beta, you arent able to download and use it unless it has been approved and added to the app store. I feel like I was fleeced out of $300. If I could get a full refund I would. You do not own this software unless you have the Activation Keys! Buyer Beware!

16.2.5 and 16.2.4 breaks on Windows

The last two updates freeze on “Loading Fairlight” on startup. Keep a copy of 16.2.3 before you upgrade. Don’t do what I did and leave town with a new update because the App store will not let you roll back. I’m unable to work for the next 2 weeks until I get home now.

Does not work with Blackmagic Advanced panels

Buy this directly from Blackmagic or somewhere where you can get the full version. This does not work with the actual Advanced DaVinci Resolve Panels. This is not explicit in the product details of this app, and Microsoft will not refund you for this. All we get is: this version "does not support some external control panels." That, to me, means third-party hardware...not the premier panels manufactured by the same company. Again, buy this from Blackmagic directly.

Don't buy this version - get it direct from BMD

I am a filmmaker who depends on my NLE to meet due dates. The app-store version of Resolve Studio was consistently unreliable for me. It regularly hung and crashed, or showed odd behavior that Blackmagic Design couldn't doagnose. After spending multiple calls over several weeks on the phone with BMD tech support, a senior rep there told me that the app store version fo resolve was "more an Microsoft product than a Blackmagic product" and that he couldn't help me solve the issue because of that. He recommended that I purchase the non-app store version of Resolve instead. I was extremely frustrated by this since I had already invested in the app store version and was not offered any type of refund or discoutn by BMD. When the Speed Editor came out, I purchased the package deal that included it and Resolve. The tech support rep was right. It is a different product in terms of stability. I love the intuitive itnerface and great color workflow. Now I also have a stable tool that lets me spend my time creating instead of calling tech support. Bottom line: Resolve is a wonderful tool, just don't get it from the app store. That version doesn't work and Blackmagic Design doesn't really support it. The license key version gets updates sooner, has some better features and is stable.
