Disappointing
I came looking for a dictionary of British English which I need to write, not to speak. What I got was a short list of a few words – useless words for my purposes – and a dictionary-long list (I presume) of locked words, each with its own in-your-face ad for the speaking version of a pronunciation dictionary, which I do not need; I can use the written form of a pronouncing dictionary quite well, thank you. That said, I’n now going to remove the Cambridge Dictionaries, which is really a free ad for one dictionary. By the way, does Cambridge University know you are using their name?
Major pronunciation blunders
Two major errors in the American pronunciation of two entries in the audio samples: 1. Obama (i.e., the 44th president of the United States). The American pronunciation as recorded: ou BAE ma — that is, the middle syllable pronounced like the “a” in “candy” The middle syllable is pronounced with a short “a,” i.e., the vowel sound in “hot.” 2. Greenwich. English pronunciation as recorded: GREN idg American pronunciation, as recorded: GREN idg Amerians pronounce the town in Connicticut as well as the site of the Observatory: GREN itch In both entries, the phonetic spelling and the pronunciation match. Ghastly.
Its a Rip Off
It may say its free, and it downloads for free, but if you want to USE it, you need to pay $14.99!!!! I can’t delete it fast enough!! Don’t waste your time with this app, its a rip off.
