SMARTReporter Overview

What is SMARTReporter? SMARTReporter is a Mac application that monitors the built-in S.M.A.R.T. status of hard disk drives, as well as performing other checks for I/O errors and RAID degradation. It periodically checks the status of all compatible connected disks and changes its icon from green to red if a problem occurs. SMARTReporter also monitors free disk space and has customizable notification options for all four disk checks, including notification via changing application icons, email, alert dialogue, on-screen notification, or launching arbitrary applications/scripts. It supports a variety of advanced options and tools, including automated S.M.A.R.T self-tests, scheduled S.M.A.R.T. attribute checking, and plotting graphs of all acquired data over time. SMARTReporter is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later and requires a 64-bit processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or better). However, it only supports S.M.A.R.T. checking for ATA, SATA, or eSATA hard disk drives unless additional software is installed to enable Mac OS X to also check the status of some USB/FireWire disks. SMARTReporter is not a substitute for regular backups and does not catch all possible disk problems before they happen.

SMARTReporter Features and Description

1. SMARTReporter is an application that can warn you of some hard disk drive failures before they actually happen! It does so by periodically polling the built-in S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk drives as well as performing other checks for "I/O errors" or R.A.I.D "degradation".

2. Because SMARTReporter relies on the S.M.A.R.T. implementation of Windows OS X, it only supports S.M.A.R.T. checking for ATA, SATA or eSATA hard disk drives unless you install additional software to enable Windows OS X to also check the status of some USB/FireWire disks.

3. SMARTReporter has completely customizable notification options for all four disk checks including notification via changing application icons, email, alert dialogue, on-screen notification (Growl or OS X 10.8 native), or by launching arbitrary applications / scripts.

4. SMARTReporter has the unique capability to check the system kernel log-file for occurrences of dangerous "I/O errors" to improve the disk failure prediction accuracy.

5. The current status of your hard disk drives is always easily recognizable because SMARTReporter changes its icon (optionally in the menubar) from green to red if a problem occurs.

6. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a technology built into most modern hard disk drives that acts as an "early warning system" for pending hard disk drive problems.

7. SMARTReporter is NOT a substitute for regular backups especially as it only concerns itself with hardware-level problems (like physical drive failures) and not at all with software-level problems (like filesystem health) that could also destroy all your data.

8. SMARTReporter can also monitor the free disk space because a completely filled boot disk might lead to system lockups.

9. Please note that a S.M.A.R.T. alert does not mean that your disk will certainly fail completely, nor can S.M.A.R.T. (or I/O-error checking) catch all possible disk problems before they happen - it's just a very valuable indicator.

10. SMARTReporter supports a variety of advanced options and tools including automated S.M.A.R.T self-tests, scheduled S.M.A.R.T. attribute checking and plotting graphs of all acquired data over time.

11. SMARTReporter periodically checks the built-in S.M.A.R.T. status of all compatible connected disks.

Pros:

  • - SMARTReporter alerted me to an I/O error, giving me enough time to get a current backup.
  • - The software is well-enough written that it popped up a warning as well, telling me about the problems my hard drive was experiencing.
  • - SMARTReporter is sort of like a pair of seatbelts in your car: You hope you won't need it, but if you do, you want it to work.
  • - It warned me that the drive on my wife's MacBook Air was getting flaky, giving me time to migrate all the data and documents off of that drive to a new drive before the bad drive stopped working altogether.
  • - SMARTReporter has always been reliable but thankfully low profile and out of the way, so I don't notice it unless I'm supposed to notice it.

Software Reviews and Criticism

not what I was hoping for

OK, maybe my need wasn't correctly lined up with this product - but I thought it would give me access to the SMART data reporting from the HDD - specifically temperature. The only way to get temperature on the drives is deep in a text-only window. All the easy to access data is surface level, error related. So this turned out to be useless for my need. I would love an app that offered this user interface, on temperature as reported via SMART.

    Saved my data

(I have a spinning disk magnetic drive) SMARTReporter alerted me to an I/O error. By itself, an I/O error doesn't mean that a drive failure is imminent, but it kept happening and my MBP was getting slower. I used the SMART tools and tests to discover that the drive was encountering bad clusters. Over 3 days, the drive went from 14 bad clusters to 39 bad clusters. Luckily, the drive did not exhaust its spare clusters, but the rate of bad clusters was indicating a drive failure soon! SMARTReporter gave me enough time to get a current backup. Then I got the drive replaced under warranty and a few hours later, I'm back up and running -- not a file out of place. Thanks to time PC and Microsoft care I have a new drive and all my files. Thanks to SMARTReporter, though, I had time to make "one last backup" and got the drive replaced before total failure.

This long time favorite app has saved the day more than once

I’ve used this app for years. Most of the time it sits unobtrusively in my menu bar or dock. However, last month, the icon changed from green to red. I didn’t notice but that was okay because the software is well-enough written that it popped up a warning as well, telling me about the problems my hard drive was experiencing. That warning gave me enough time to backup one last time before the hard drive died completely in my computer. Yes, I should have been backing up regularly. (I’m doing that now.) Even so, it is nice to have this extra warning system in place. When I think of all the photos I would have lost, this app is priceless.

It's worked reliably and valuably for years

SMARTReporter is sort of like a pair of seatbelts in your car: You hope you won't need it, but if you do, you want it to work. I've been using SMARTReporter for upteen years now (and I'm happy it's now on the App Store). It only really kicked in once for me, but that was extremely valuable: It warned me that the drive on my wife's PC was getting flaky. That gave me time to migrate all the data and documents off of that drive to a new drive before the bad drive stopped working altogether. SMARTReporter has always been reliable but thankfully low profile and out of the way, so I don't notice it unless I'm supposed to notice it.
