English to Russian Russian To English
I have been using this for a little over a year. I compare translations between this program and google translator and microsoft translator for accuracy. This program provides accurate or close to accurate translations 95% of the time. The voice is extremely helpful. I use Skype, translate the information and then push the voice button and the individual on the other end of Skype can hear the translation. I can carry on a conversation for hours. I get immediate feed back on the accuracy of the translation and have developed many friendships with this program. I cannot speak, read or write Russian. The individuals on the “other end” have stated many many times they believe I can speak and understand Russian fluently. This program is extremely eaisy to use, good accuracy and the voice helps you learn the language and makes it very interesting for the receiving party. When the translation is very important I will run it through this program, google and microsoft and evaluate the results. I choose this program 95 % of the time. Microsoft is more accurate but far more difficult and time consuming to use. For my use google has been the least accurate.
Translation what you would expect; Dictionaries nonexistent
Am I missing something with all these 5-star people? Yes its source is Google Translator, which is on par with any other translation software, and about where it was 12 years ago: largely unreliable for anything more than simple words and certain simple phrases. That there haven't been more advances in capturing the nuance and matrix organization of language and communication surprises me. But that's not this app's fault. For what it does on the translation side, it's alright. Detecting the language without you having to specify it is a nice option, as is the spoken option with results, and it saves me from going to a language-specific website to get this. But it also touts a Dicionary side… and at least for me, THEY DON'T WORK! in any language. At all. I haven't seen a review pertaining to the Dicionaries… is it possible no one else has checked them out? Or is mine just a glitch? I was going to give this one star, but I reconsidered, given that its UI for translation is a nice alternative to what's been out there before.
Useful to me!
I often come across little bits of foreign languages in the middle of stories that I’m reading. Universal Translator not only automatically figures out the language (correctly almost every time), but also translates it for me. Its accuracy is good enough for my use. But I don’t understand why the links to Universal Translator Support take you to an all Chinese language site that seems to be for games. Am I supposed to run all the text on the page through their app to figure out how to get support? I have a suggestion for a future feature: add a contextual menu item. That would let you highlight text, right-click it, and get a translation without having to open the app itself. Alternatively, it could be a Service, but that wouldn’t be quite as convenient.
An amazing program that works really well
I used this when dealing with vendors in foregin countries and they said that it does a pretty darn good job translating. it’s fast, you can just copy/paste back and forth. No ads, no pop-ups, super simple and lightweight. It might be one of my favorite utilities ever. Under the radar and totally invaluable. I was checking to see if there was a newer version, this one has been out for a while but seriously, I don’ tknow what you could to it. The program is beautiful in it’s simplicity and adding anything to it would just be clutter. Only thing I could think to add would be an automatic paste to/from clipboard? If I copy something in another applicaiton to the clipboard, it auto-pastes into the translator and when I translate some text it automatically puts it into the clipboard? This such a minor thing, seriously thanks to the author for making this great program and giving it to the world for free, thank you, thank you!
