Software Reviews and Criticism

    Bummed

I have been hoping they would release this extension for months/years. I have installed it and it doesn't appear to function at all unless you give it full access to your browser history, password information, etc. for every website in your browsing history. Obviously this isn't going to fly. This is a major miss on an extension that a lot of us have been waiting on for ages. Very disappointed...

    Alpha level product

After waiting a long time, posting requests on ReadCube's support pages, like other reviewers, I found out this had been relased. Now I know why this release was not widely advertised. It's a security/privacy nightmare and even on my M1 PC it conjures up the beachball. Not to mention it hardly works at all. It can't seem to cope with my University's library proxy service. Going back to Firefox and it's extension until this is fully baked.

The worst thing I've seen on my life on the app store

It's literally not working at all and it's making safari totally unusable. I really don't know why the extension is saying that I have blocked all the cookies when I don't and also asking me for access to a incredible ammount of webs right now the start. I really don't know you can have a decent product (papers 3) and you can convert in this moustrosity.

    Bricks Safari

Do not install this! As noted in the other reviews, it renders Safari completely unresponsive (constant spinning beach ball and will not load pages). If you do get stuck, you can uninstall the app driving the extension via your applications folder - without fighting the unresponsive Safari. Can't believe Microsoft allowed this on the store.

    tremendous improvement over papers 2

I run the desktop app just to put a copy of all my books and papers on the Windows. I use papers in Chrome, where everything works perfectly (not all relevant extensions work well in Safari yet; there doesn't even seem to be a Google Scholar extension for Safari). This is much more convenient than using a desktop app, since I search for papers in the browser, and use an extension to add ones I find. Almost everything about Papers 3 is a big improvement over Papers 2. The only major improvement it needs is to get metadata by ISBN for books. You have to lookup the DOI, or put the metadata in by hand.
