Update to 2.8.1 Requires Restart and Still Needs Work

Had some trouble with the app after installing the update, and it finally launched after restarting the computer. Now it won’t quit properly - just hangs and requires a force quit. In addition, it still needs added functionality. The video library is nice, and ability to download them is also handy for archiving events, but it needs so much more. The computer app should have the exact same administrative functions you are provided in the mobile app (and maybe even the website). My biggest pet peeve... although the world is so connected with their mobile devices these days, it would be nice to set my motion zones on a computer screen with a mouse instead of having to try and do this on a little phone screen where it doesn’t even display the whole camera view or even let you push your zones outside the (screen) visible area where you know the camera is seeing. Overall, it would be nice to have a single point where I can change every single thing instead of having to bounce between app, website, or mobile app to change something. Computers have the most processing power, storage, and network bandwidth (if wired) of all our devices. There are plenty of resources to do it all. Let’s use it.

Years of video latency. Unusable LIVE

I've owned this Ring for 2-3 years. It's caught people trying to break in and that's great however the lack of 24/7 recording, the reliance on a trigger, means that many events are not captured in time. As a doorbell answering system, sound quality is poor. Basically, the images and the responsiveness are fictional. I've done network checks, added extenders to wifi and no improvement. Unless someone is sitting at your door for several minutes, there's a good chance you're going to be disappointed day or night. Secondly, the Neighbors application doesn't allow you to see exact criminal activity locations which hurts efforts to identify which homes are at risk. Neighbors can't exchange photos with each other directly after the initial video and again, the apps are full of moments that don't have enough video before the trigger. Nest is 24/7 and it makes a difference.

    Dumpster Fire

2.8.2 Update: Having deleted 2.8.1 of the app and updated to PC 11.1, I saw app 2.8.2 was out and tried again. It acutally worked well for about 36 hours. Then it exploded into flames -- beachballs, videos not popping up, force quits required. Calling this software a dumpster fire is unkind to dumpster fires because those eventually run out of garbage. This app must have a perpetual garbage supply. Update: More than two months later, and the app hasn't been updated, let alone fixed. It is actually worse under Big Sur 11.0.1. My investment in the Microsoft ecosystem is large. My investment in Ring is two chimes and a doorbell. I guess I need to replace what was a useful doorball. Special thanks to Ring for reneging on their promise to add HomeKit. ------- If I were at Ring right now, I'd be looking for whatever developer broke this thing. Version 2.8.1 is a disaster. Does it beachball? Yes, it does. Does it fail to connect to the doorbell? Yes, it does. The website connects to the doorbell just fine, and the application posts notifications about motion, but most of the time, no live video window comes up. Trying to look at a live view often produces a beachball, as does looking at recent recordings. C'mon guys. Have some pride.

    Works for me...

Earlier this year, I tried the Ring doorbell. Unfortunately, my DSL provider could only give me 1Mbps upload speed. In short, it didn't work. The video was choppy, voice was aweful, and the latency was ridiculous. However, I just had fiber internet service installed and I'm getting 300Mbps upload and download speeds. I tried the Ring doorbell again and it works flawlessly; instantaineous notifications with just a little latency on the sound / video. So, I bought a spotlight cam. This too works great. Both my iPhone Ring app and this Windows app work just fine.
