Software Reviews and Criticism

    Better than Expected

After reading some of the reviews I was worried the gifs would be sluggish or stuttery, but after trying several (with a few resource intensive apps running - Photoshop, VLC, Transmission, Chrome, & Steam) I was pleasantly surprised to learn that was not the case. The scalable option is nice, altho I wish that you could set the background (which frames the gif) to a picture, as of now you can only select colors, but really thats a minor nitpick. There are three options for scaling the gif file, which are adequate but do leave room for improvement. I haven’t yet tried it while using a second monitor, so I’m not sure how well that will work, but overall it seems to be running very nicely. My tech specs: 2.8 GHz i7 Processor, 16 GB DDR3 Memory, Intel Iris 1536MB Graphics Card. I am docking 1 Star because I think there is room for improvement. The option to have a background picture that frames the gif for example, or, better yet, the option to use gif files that have transparencies over your existing desktop wallpaper. Also a few more options couldn’t hurt (the ability to change playback speed, loop time -infinite, reverse, palindrome-, an option to cycle through a folder of gif files) but overall its a good app as it stands.

    Speed

I really like this application. It has allowed me to set some pretty cool backgrounds… although there is one MAJOR flaw. The gif playback is extremely slow, I would love if you could add a slider to your gif selection tool so that someone could edit the speed at which the gif plays. I understand that will cause more CPU usage although that is no problem to many of us with higher end computers. It will also allow the owners of slower computers to turn down the refresh rate.

    Functions beautifully!

The app is simplicity itself, just drag and drop, and the images play smoothly regardless of file size. I don’t have an issue with the playback speed, and in fact there’s another app called Animated Desktop which DOES have a slider control for delay time as well as a frames-per-second feature - it’s a CPU hog that stutters and freezes constantly. This app does precisely what it promises with none of these issues.

    Only Ok

The screenshots for this application must be outdated, as I don’t see the “Low CPU Usage Mode” checkbox as shown here. Also, this application is only ok so far. The gif’s I want to use end up playing extremely slow… so the animation that I found to look great when viewing my gif (before setting as wallpaper) is not what I see once I set as wallpaper… it would sure be great if it just played gifs at the same speed as every other application… kinda sad :( If the speed was fixed, then this is exactly what everyone would be looking for. I want animated GIF wallpapers that animate at the proper speed please.
