Outstanding CL, true Windows UI, no extra junk

I teach AI and Lisp at the university level and was looking for a true Common Lisp implementation for the Windows that will let you develop serious projects, but not have all the Rube Goldberg extras of overly-engineered (and either expensive or limited) alternatives. CCL is the best — and I’ve used Lisp, many development environments, for a lot longer than my students have been alive. Nice, clean interface, easy for a beginnner to learn and manage, but with the full power of Lisp under it. Only complaint is that there’s no way I can see to pay for this software. I woud do that happily, and ask my students to do so as well.

Works great... if you're still on High Sierra

My High Sierra laptop has a swollen battery, so I've been forced to upgrade to a new Catalina laptop. I already knew what to expect from experience trying to get CCL to work on Mojave. CCL is just broken on PC versions later than High Sierra, and that's just sad, because it was the only open-source Lisp implementation that supported GUI programming on the Windows. Perhaps it's finally time to buy a proprietary Lisp. :(

Does not Work on Windows with Catalina

If you are new to programming, and want something that installs by itself like other Windows apps, and fires up when launched, this is NOT it. The app downloaded from the app store gave me an error message. I tried to see if I could install the latest release from github. I could not make it work either. Good luck if you want to try to make this work. Aug 25, 2020.

      Excellent Common Lisp environment

If one cares to develop in Common Lisp, or just plainly creating great apps, give Clozure Common Lisp (CCL) a chance. You do not need Emacs with this, just jump right in on one of the greatest dev environment available.
