ChatSecure Messenger Overview

What is ChatSecure Messenger? ChatSecure is a messaging app that provides OTR and OMEMO encryption over XMPP. It allows users to create new accounts on public XMPP servers or connect to their own server for extra security. The app is interoperable with other clients that support OTR, OMEMO, and XMPP. ChatSecure uses open source cryptographic libraries to ensure privacy and security. It features XMPP with TLS certificate pinning, OTR for verifiable end-to-end encryption and forward secrecy, OMEMO for a mobile-friendly alternative to OTR, and SQLCipher to locally encrypt conversation logs. The app is free and open source, and donations are accepted to support ongoing development.

    Good try but...

Ghostiery and similar programs have been deliberately barred by Microsoft - which loves to play both sides of the datatheft crisis, claiming (and refusing to discuss taken) that it has really good encryption, while not allowing (as required under the Microsoft Internet Explorer decision) the ability to run with Tor or a full version of Firefox, while erasing its own browser from the system. While Microsoft execs know there are companies that will crack open an i-phone for anyone with the $$s, it plays the We are So Honest game by announcing it will not do the job requested by ignorant police organizations. So, here’s a program that claims not to collect anything much, and only gives what’s collected to folks who say real nice that they won’t let things escape, telling you to use a leaky product on an iPhone using a program unavailable because it doesn’t want Real Firefox or Tor available. So claims of security just cannot be true. I wish I were wrong about this, but what we need is some way to force Microsoft into allowing full PGP, if not RSA to run on its hand-held platforms.

    Sounds Great!

Unfortunately I’m not really much of an advanced tech in any ay shape or form and find a lot of advanced tech mumbo-jumbo painfully confusing even though I find many types of advanced technology somewhat interesting as well as I usually have or try to use it the best and most up to date stuff when I can regardless of if I even know what I’m doing! Lol! With that being said, when I don’t necessarily understand something all that well I try to at least learn where or what the reputable resources are and The Tor Project is one regarding privacy/security so the fact that they support ChatSecure and list it on their site with direct links to download it means it should be pretty good for secure chatting purposes so once I begin getting more familiar with it I can add more about it!

    Deleted Tor? Really? :(

I’ve hunted around online and found no earthly reason why Tor was removed. The issues in ChatSecure github mention support is spotty, but Tor has been getting more funding recently. The probable actual reason was also mentioned: the hope that by removing Tor, they can get ChatSecure into the Chinese App Store. So another handy privacy feature dies thanks to the venal Xi Jinping regime. You removed Tor, so I removed a star.

feels like a beta. hoping it keeps improving.

i want to love this app. xmpp is good but apps are lacking. and this one has potential. but some frustrations: - often crashes on startup or hangs with a white screen - no search? - it’s clunky to get to your contact list - there isn’t much differentiation between users in group chats so it’s hard to see who wrote what at first glance. - i would like to customize colors and chat room icons pluses: - honors system default font size - notifications work - messages are sent and received reliably - open source i really hope there are updates in the future!

Nevermind Signal, this is the real deal

Although signal has good encryption technology, it doesn’t have much technology for anonymize yourself behind it like chat secures XXMP + Omemo technology. The encryption algorithms in this app are just as strong if not stronger than Signals, and it DOES not require a phone number like signal. Both are great depending on your use case, but I believe chat secure is better if you want to stay safe from the NSA or from prying eyes. Its great for reporters, high security situations/people, system admins who need to protect their assets or identities from hackers or just anyone in general who wants to stay safer and more anonymous on the internet. In a day where mass surveillance is a real thing, this app is important for privacy of good honest people. This app is simple to use, very stable, and developed by well respected developers. It is not full of features, like telegram, but that is because it’s focus is on security and anonymity. Less code=less flaws. So if that’s what you are looking for, go ahead and ditch the signal app, and the spy driven wikr app, and the crap security telegram app, and start using this well developed, hardened chat app that implements algorithms and technologies much older and more refined/tested than the signal app. Thanks for chat secure!
