Software Reviews and Criticism

Poorly Programmed / Multiple Major Bugs

Very “buggy” software: 1) While the program takes pictures when the camera wakes up, it also continues to take pictures at random intervals after the computer is unlocked, generating dozens of photos while you work at your computer. You later need to spend time deleting large groups of photos. 2) When you select “quit” from the program menu, the program continues to run in the background with no visible indication that it is running. You will need to “kill” the process using the “Activity Monitor” to shut it down. 3) The “Automatically start Security Camera at login” option cannot be selected (this does not work/no “check” appears in the check box when you select this option). 4) Finally, the “Syncronize Captured Photos with Dropbox” option will become “unchecked” for no apparent reason despite the presence of Dropbox on my computer. With glaring problems like this, and given that the last update was in February of 2015 (as of today, January, 7, 2016), I would recommend searching for other options. No updates for ~ one year with major bugs in the program is unacceptable for a program that is not free.

    Simply Does Not Work!

Camera does not take photos when waking up out of sleep - as advertised. Does not take photos when logging in from screen saver password. Only takes photos when log out and back into user -- and only takes the photo after you have logged back in. So basically, if you want to catch a theif you will need to NOT put a password on your user account because it wont take a picture at the login screen. Completely useless for security. (Also, does not support sending photos to an email address as other aps do.) Microsoft should disavow this ap from the ap store as a "Security Camera" ap until bug are fixed and major advancements made. Now off to waste time applying for that refund.

Don’t presume to know where I want to save the photos

App developers: Please stop cluttering up the top level of my Dropbox folder. Give me the ability to set the save folder including the name of the folder (“Security Camera” is a little obvious?) Additional feature request: Allow me to execute a script after a photo is taken/saved. This would allow me to, for example, set up a smart notification system where, if my phone isn’t near my computer or possibly on the same wifi network, the picture could be discreetly uploaded to a *SECURE* server (without relying on the very obvious and easily circumventable Dropbox) and a notification can be sent to my phone with the photo attached.
