elegantly crafted gadget
I love apps like this because they don't promise anything they can't do, and they do everything they promise. They don't add stress to your relationship with your computer; they make it more delightful. Apps like this, it's like a tiny little brain massage, a healthy microdose of dopamine, every time you open them up. I have one 'tot' per day of the week. When some random passing thought occurs, I grab it and stick it in the day's tot, so that I don't have to obsess about where it goes or what it means or what i'm eventually going to do with it, if anything. It's just an instantaneous word-satisfaction device. Then every now and then, as I'm skimming through the days in a free moment, I find a fragment and it now makes sense where it should go or what I should do with it. So then I do that thing, and can delete it out of Tot. It's like a little hatchery for useful idea-trout. Would buy again! :)
Incredibly useful and has nice features
Let me start off by saying that I'm a student with a bunch of research projects. These projects require me to take notes, and this app is beautifully designed and so useful for doing that! The 7 dots (or notepads) that you get are all color-coded, and they're awesome since I can use one for each class, and at the end of the day, I can just erase them and write something else the next day. The app also has a ton of cute (but useful!) little features, like a dot going gray when nothing is written in it, and the app icon changing to the color dot that you're on. The app also makes use of the touch bar, so if you have one, then changing your color text, bolding, italicizing, etc. becomes very convinient. Using my notes app and filling it up with all my research notes can become annoying, so I love using Tot instead!
Near-perfect tool for a linchpin job
I've been using this app for about 3 days and I feel like my digital life has been transformed. Gone are the myriad anonymous TextEdit windows that used to litter my screen. When I need to write something down or take quick notes, I know where to go, and when I need those notes, I know where to find them; and I don't lose my place in whatever I was working on in the meantime. It's beautiful to look at and the UI is well thought out. I love this app. I bought the $20 iPhone version immediately and suggest you do too if you can afford it, because this free app is worth some bucks. Anything not perfect? Maybe. I'd like to see a LITTLE more Markdown support (not too much!), and I'd like to be able to make the windows a LITTLE bigger (not too much!). But these are quibbles and new features are still appearing, so who knows what the next few weeks will bring.
Didn't know I needed this!
Fantastic little app which has quickly become indispensable - so much so that I bought the $20 iOS app, so I have it wherever I go (and to support the devs!). There are plenty of notes apps - but something about having this one in the menubar, instantly summoned with a keyboard shortcut and with a limited number of color coded notes just meshes with how my brain works. I use it for a to-do, shopping list, fitness diary, jotting down a temporary note before transferring somewhere more permanent - and each of those tasks has a single, defined place in Tot. Syncing with iOS seems rock solid, and editing on iOS is also great. It's probably not within the scope of the app, but I would love to be able to insert images - e.g. when I am jotting down notes on an experimental protcol at work or a recipe at home, I'd like to be able to insert quick snapshots as I go. Might not fit with the minimal aesthetic though. Likewise with insertion of tables (or even support of markdown tables) Some of the formatting is a bit weird - for example, bold text is always the color of the "dot". I would prefer if bold text on the first line was colored, but black on any other line - so the first line serves as the title. Overall, I love it and would highly recommend installing (after all, the Windows app is free!!).
Useful little utility that you didn't know you needed
I use this app as an expanded TODO list for my ongoing projects. It works really well at that: I use one tab for each of my ongoing projects to jot down quick notes about their progress (so seven is aplenty), who to follow-up on, etc. The best thing is, I can set a single shortcut to open the window (I chose F8) and get to my projects immediately! This became even better in the latest update when the window actually appeared as a popover from the menu bar. Very nice touch. The app is useful, but it became way better after I changed the keyboard shortcut for switching tabs to be Control-Tab and Control-Shift-Tab, same as that in Safari to help with my muscle memory. I'd say it's an essential change to truly make this app a productivity enhancer!
