Backside Attack Overview
What is Backside Attack? Backside Attack is an educational app designed for students who are learning organic chemistry for the first time. The app focuses on the SN2 reaction, which is one of the first reactions students learn in organic chemistry. The game provides a platform for students to learn about various variables associated with chemical reactions, such as leaving group ability, nucleophilicity, steric factors, and solvent effects. The project is led by Dr. Neil Garg, an organic chemistry Professor at UCLA, and powered by Element26, Inc., thanks to Dr. Daniel D. Caspi. The app also features Check Yourself +50 and Chem Yourself features to help students learn and earn points.
1. The SN2 reaction is great for educational purposes, as it provides a forum for students to learn about many common variables associated with chemical reactions, such as leaving group ability, nucleophilicity, steric factors, and solvent effects.

Excellent Ochem Tool
The app integrates succinct explanations to the various reactions in visual context. I find the most helpful part of the app is the pop-up questions that ask which reactions would be quicker in comparison to a reaction you’ve just done because it applies the knowledge you’re learning and builds upon that. The review section is amazing in explaining the why’s (and why not’s). For someone who has had a lot of trouble getting organic chemistry, this app makes SN2 reactions very digestible.
Chemistry at your fingertips!
This a great app that drives home a lot of core concepts found in for any chemistry class! Organic chemistry can be quite abstract on pen and paper, but this app puts those concepts right at your fingertips! As a grad student teaching assistant, I can definitely see this being incredibly useful for students. Did I mention it’s also a ton of fun?
I’ve never felt this kind of chemistry with an app before
I was having alkynes of trouble with organic chemistry at the beginning. Amine, it’s really hard to just sit there and memorize all the different types of reactions. This app helps learners really engage with the material and intuitively understand different reactions! Great learning tool to supplement classroom studies.
Actually Really Fun
I am failing Organic Chem right now and in a desperate bid to understand something about it, I took to Google for research. Found this app and have been glued to it for the past 40 minutes. It’s surprisingly fun and addicting and it teaches you concepts along the way. Very enjoyable game!
