Greenshot Overview

What is Greenshot? Greenshot is a lightweight screenshot software tool that allows users to quickly create screenshots of a selected region, window, or fullscreen. It also offers features such as annotation, highlighting, and obfuscation of parts of the screenshot. The software allows for easy export of the screenshot in various ways, including saving to file, copying to clipboard, and attaching to an email. Greenshot is available for both PC and Mac, but the Mac version may not be as feature-rich as the PC version. Users can communicate with the Greenshot team to report issues or suggest new features.

1. NOTE FOR CATALINA AND ABOVE: PC Catalina introduced major security changes and now some function regarding the operating system (like file handling, camera and also screenshots) needs to be given permission by the user.

2. NOTE: As some guys didn't find out how to start working with Greenshot, here's how: On the top of your screen is a clock.

3. Go to "Security & Privacy" -> "Privacy" -> "Screen recording" and enable Greenshot.

4. Unfortunately you'll have to enable screenshots for Greenshot in the system preferences.

5. WARNING for long-time Greenshot users: Greenshot for Windows is NOT as feature-rich as you might expect when you were using it on the PC before.

6. When you're just writing an AppStore review for Greenshot, we cannot answer your requests! Please keep that in mind.

7. - Export the screenshot in various ways: save to file, copy to clipboard, attach to e-mail.

8. - Quickly create screenshots of a selected region, window or fullscreen.

Why so different?

I was SUPER EXCITED when I saw this was available for Windows, because most of the Windows screenshot tools I’ve used are seriously lacking and Greenshot for Windows is AMAZING. But this Windows version is just not nearly as good. The arrows look weird, although I do appreciate being able to add text along the arrow itself. The inability to change the font size and remove the font shadowing is just baffling. Still, it’s an okay tool. What I really want is the editing features I’m used to on Greenshot for Windows. That’s the whole reason I bought Greenshot. :-/

Not Launching

Did everything by the book. Paid $1.99, DL’d the program and installed the latest version per App Store (at this time it’s 1.2.6). Trying to open it does nothing, will not launch, cannot snap screenshots. Rebooted PC, opened Finder and can see the program but still will not launch. Very frustrated beause I loved this program on my PC and never had any issues. I’m not here to complain or bash anything, just want someone to give me pointers ^_^ so I can get it working. The bug trackers and FAQ seem like a wild goose chase because noone really mentions the same issue I’m experiencing. FWIW, I can install and launch other programs without issue and if this is not possible I’d like my credit card to be refunded. Thanks

Help us out!

As so many others have already said, its severely lacking the functionality found on PCs. After some confusion, I finally found an obscure mention of going up to the clock in the top right corner, clicking on the G, and finding a few options for grabbing screenshots (manually setting area, or a whole window, or entire screen). Nothing like how we do it on the PC! Anyway, I selected “Capture Area”, the mouse pointer changed to the area selector, I selected “copy to clipboard”…. but now it won’t paste. Nothing. Tried again using the ctrl-1 hotkey, same steps, and again nothing to paste. So you’re giving full functionality on PC for free, vs no functionality on Windows for $2. Kind of like being given a Lexus for free, vs paying big bucks with no refund for a Ford Pinto lemon. I either need an app that works, or I need my $2 back. And no way to contact you guys for tech support… DON’T BUY IT PEOPLE!

It's ok

I paid for this app, and have yet to get anything beneficial out of support. I would to stop being pompted to save the screenshot. 100% of the time, I am copying the screenshot to something else (word, powerpoint, pdf, slack), and just want the window to close without prompts. I tend to create hundreds a day, so hundreds of prompts gets annoying quickly. I see others have asked for this, and the response is "we do not want to clutter the interface" --- guys, it's just a check box in preferences... nothing gets cluttered. The "mask" feature hides the mask behind what I want to mask... it only does this on Windows, windows works correctly. Given the age of the last release, I'm guessing they are no longer developing the app, which means we are paying for a version that will not have new features.

No Quick Save in Windows Version

I've absolutely loved Greenshot on PC so I'm disappointed that the Windows version is so different, and ultimately I cannot use it for my needs. My main issue is that I need the screenshots to automatically save to a predetermined folder without the save-as dialogue box popping up. I want to be able to hit one button to take a screenshot, and not have to click anything else in order to save it. I work in film and need to be able to take quick consecutive screenshots as seamlessly as possible. If you guys are able to update this, I will be happy to come back to Greenshot! Thanks for your work guys.
