Software Reviews and Criticism

    Too Many Big Problems

I just purchased The Document Converter from the Microsoft App Store. It does work but note these negatives: The software uploads the file to somewhere on the internet, violating my confidentiality. The privacy policy has no restrictions on how the developer uses the information and has only minor restrictions on the developer transferring user data to others. There is no reason for the app developer to upload the file to its server except to harvest data. It's slow. If the software worked locally it would take very little time at all. I suspect the upload/download cycle takes far more time than actually doing the conversion. I have a 2019 PC 16, 8C and 32Gb. The software will not batch convert *.doc files. Each file must be dragged to the app window, then wait for it to upload, then wait for conversion, then wait for the download. The software places the output file to the Downloads folder. Each fiile then needs to be manually moved to the proper place, which takes extra time and clicks. The app changes the file creation date and the file modification date to today's date rather than preserving the original. I'm very disappointed. It would have been easy to program the software so it works without these blocking issues. Particularly the first.

Works ... for the most part

I used "The Document Converter" to convert several files from Microsoft Word .doc format to its .docx format. For the most part it worked as advertised, except: 1) if the .doc file contains a macro of any sort, "The Document Converter" won't convert it and 2) if you are attempting a mass conversion of .doc files to .docx files, "The Document Converter" won't pass the original (file) values for "Date Created" and "Date Modified" to the new .docx file(s), but rather resets it to today's date. If it is important that you retain the original "Date Created" and "Date Modified" file values so that you can sort them chronologically, "The Document Converter" will make a lot of work for you forcing you to manually reset those old values in the new converted files.

    Converting Old Word Files

I had some old .doc files that had not been converted into an updated form of MS Word when I migrated to PC. These were all old letters that I originally transcribed 28 years ago. I was able to convert them all into .rtf files without a hitch. I would rather be able to buy this program outright than subscribe.

    Does its job

The app does exactly what is says it does and is very quick about it, so in terms of quality, it is excellent. My reason for giving it a 4/5 instead of a 5/5 is because it only allows you to convert 2 files for free before hiding behind a paywall. Normally, this would be a huge problem for me, but this app offers a lifetime pass for $10 which, for the amount of times I use it, seems like a reasonable price to me.

    Disappointed

I have several hundred old pict files. This was a file format that Microsoft created (way ahead of its time) that had a bit mapped layer and a vector layer - like PDF files. So I would like a program that would maintain the information in its original format. Sense PDF how's this structure I was hoping that I could change all my PICTs to PDF and keeping the file structure the same. But when I try to convert PICT to PDF, I got an error message. There was nothing wrong with the files because they were open in Preview. However, Preview inputs PICT files and output files that are only bitmapped. So they can't be edited in something like illustrator. I tried different outfit formats and finally found one that would work: PICT to JPEG. Of course this is not what I want because JPEG is only bitmapped and the vector information is lost. To add insult to injury, the one thing that I could get to work with something I didn't want, and I would be charged monthly. So what's the purpose of this program? It seems to do exactly what Apples Preview does.
