ID Util Overview
What is ID Util? ID Util is an app that allows users to view previews of Adobe InDesign, IDML, and InCopy files without the need for Adobe software. Users can also view styled stories, linked images, and used fonts, and export previews and styled stories to standard formats. The app also includes a Quick Look feature for document previews and an Open in InDesign function to ensure files are opened in the proper version of InDesign.
1. ID Util overcomes this obstacle by allowing users to view the page previews along with the document stories and images without the need of having InDesign.
2. ID Util allows you to view InDesign previews, styled story content, linked images, and used fonts.
3. If you have multiple versions of InDesign installed on your system or simply want to ensure that you do not upsave documents by accident you can use ID Util’s Open in InDesign functionality to ensure that your files are opened by the proper version of InDesign.
4. Preview Adobe InDesign, IDML, and InCopy files without the need of having Adobe software installed on your system.
5. View the page print size as well as the file version (e.g. InDesign CC 2019).
6. • View the document version (what version of InDesign was used to create the document).
7. Many people receive or have access to InDesign files but cannot view those files because they do not have InDesign itself.
8. Use ID Util to ensure that files are opened in the proper version of InDesign.
9. This comes in handy when you may no longer have InDesign installed on your system or if you receive InDesign files from others but do not have access to InDesign yourself.
10. • Preview Adobe InDesign, IDML, and InCopy files (CS2 through CC 2019).
11. • If you have InDesign installed you can resave the document with High-Resolution previews of all pages.

Not helpful for exporting text with footnotes and tables
From an InDesign document I needed to export text, footnotes, tables, and graphics to a Word document, and this app did not do that. The tables came across as a series of XXXXs and no images were exported. There was an export option for .rtf but none for .doc or .docx. The direct export from within InDesign to .rtf works better and that isn’t saying much. I also tried copying the text from the InDesign document and pasting it into a Word doc — that actually worked a little better — at least the footnotes appeared as they should, but still no images (even tho they are placed within the flow of the story) and the table information exported as single paragraphs within an additional text frame. InDesign still doesn’t appear to have a good way to export to Word. My client wanted to repurpose the finished text in Word, as he is not an InDesign user.
Glad to see CC2018 Support
The free functionality of this utility is great for adding quickview support to my InDesign files. The update supporting CC2018 will make it easier for us to update our files with the HD res preview. I know max-resolution previews embedded can add some bloat to the InDesign files, but it’s been a huge boost while collaborating with my non-InDesign using peers. Project managers love that they can “peek” at a file’s content without asking me to open the file for them (I try not to take that personally). I only wish there was a way to batch update my files to have the HD preview embedded on older files without also updating the InDesign version. Thanks, Markzware!
Extract text from ID file ...
Received an InDesign file that’s newer than ours; person who sent it went home for the day. The PDF they sent was the wrong size AND they’d converted the fonts to outlines, so I had to rebuild the file with minutes to go before deadline. This little app pulled the text from the ID file cleanly and it was just a matter of applying some style sheets and the hard part was done.
Quick and Useful
In folders flooded with InDesign documents with very similar file names, it is nice to see previews via QuickLook to open the correct file. I will still create PDFs for sharing with clients, but it is extremely useful adding the Windows OS QuickLook feature. In our office, it is easy to share via the server with those that don’t have InDesign. The Free aspect of this app makes it worth a download!
Helped me get infro from InDesign files
With the new OS I couldn't open any InDesign files. This allowed me to at least copy and paste the info into another edition software. It will be time consuming to sort it all out, but at least I didn't lose the info.
